3rd graders are gearing up for Livingston's annual Spooktacular Jamboree! This week the one who started it all, the lovely Mrs. Schurman, visited us and modeled some fantastic read alouds. We are looking forward to next week's classroom competitions!

Livingston Students!!
We have an amazing surprise planned for you today! The University of Wyoming, in collaboration with some of our very own Park County leaders and businesses, is bringing a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) day to us, TODAY, at Livingston! Students in all grades and classes will enjoy multiple rotations throughout the day that have a variety of different activities and learning experiences. Listed below is more info! We can't wait to see you all this morning! #livyrocks #UW
1. Math: Karagh Brummond (PhD) & Erin Klauk (MS)
· Karagh is faculty in the Honors College at the University of Wyoming (PhD in Neuroscience)
· Erin is faculty in the Geology and Geophysics Department at the University of Wyoming (Masters in Geology)
· They serve as the Co-Directors of the Science Initiative Roadshow and Community Engagement
· Karagh has performed STEM outreach at UW for 7 years and Erin has over 16 years of K-12 teaching experience
· They will be running a station on math concepts for students to work on skills including measurements and geometry
2. Brain Science: Madison Ruhmann
· Madison is a graduate student in the Neuroscience Program at the University of Wyoming
· She will be running a station where students will get to look at brains of different animal species, comparing and contrasting their structure and function
· The students will then take what they have learned about the brains and create their own animal and mold their brain out of playdoh
3. Ecology: Alyssa Baldwin
· Alyssa is a graduate student in the Ecosystem Science & Management Program at the University of Wyoming
· She will be running a station on the Ecology of Beaver Dams which is her area of research
· Students will get the chance to construct their own beaver dam and test its structural capacity in an ecological wetland
4. Engineering/Physics: Austin Bernard
· Austin is an undergraduate student in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wyoming
· He will be running a station using his research on HoloLens for students to experience as well as teaching the students about non-Newtonian physics
5. Viruses: Erica Farris
· Erica is an undergraduate student in Molecular Biology at the University of Wyoming
· She will be running a station about viruses where students will get to look at plush versions of common viruses, learn about them, and then test their own hands to see where they spread germs.
6. Animal Traits: Elizabeth Lungren
· Elizabeth Lungren is an undergraduate student in molecular biology at the University of Wyoming
· Liz will be running a station where students will learn about adaptive animal traits
· They will then get to create their own catalog moth to hide around the room and others will get to see how well the moths adapt to their room environments testing who gets found and turns to prey
7. Engineering Design Process: Cindy Jones (M.A.Ed. & PhD)
· Cindy Jones is the Program Manager for the K-14 STEM Education Outreach Office for the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Wyoming
· Cindy has 26 years of experience in facilitating authentic learning in K-12 classrooms
· Students will be performing a number of different engineering design challenges to test their skills!
8. Mobile Wykshop Makerspace: Emily Leinen (MS)
· Emily is the Mobile Makerspace Coordinator at the University of Wyoming with a background in plant science and education
· She has experience in creating and making for pre-K, K-12, and adult STEAM projects
· Students will get the chance to play with the maker space technology by using coding cards to take robots through a maze.
9. Cody Conservation District (CCD): Olivia Bergeron
· The Cody Conservation District provides a number of educational opportunities surrounding topics in soil, water, and much more!
· They are located on Stampede Ave and hope to create sustained connections with teachers in the community!
10. Norwest College Wyoming: Austin Conklin (PhD)
· Austin has a background in molecular medicine and is an Assistant Professor of Anatomy & Physiology at Northwest College in Powell
· Austin will be exciting students about anatomy by giving them a hands-on look at pig hearts and sheep brains.
11. Horticulture Park County Extension: Ted Smith
· Ted is a Horticulturist with the University of Wyoming Park County Extension Office
· Students will be exploring soil acidity and possibly powering batteries with the power of food
12. Mark Lyford is the Executive Director of the Science Initiative Programs at UW and will be on-site for support and networking

Plant studies meets at the intersection of math and science standards. Second graders enjoyed a beautiful fall day studying leaves and measuring leaves and roots to the nearest centimeter.

This week, we were able to have our first Student Council meeting of the year. At this meeting, Student Council class representatives elected from amongst themselves the Livingston Student Council officers for the 2023/2024 School Year. Congratulations to our new officers--if you can't tell from the pictures, we think these students are going to have a fun time on Student Council this year!
